What is in Holistapet probiotic chews for dogs

Each chew carries 3 billion colony-forming units across nine strains: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus brevis, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium lactis and Streptococcus thermophilus.

Six of the nine are Lactobacillus species and two are Bifidobacterium, the two families found in most dog and human probiotics. Streptococcus thermophilus is the culture used to make yogurt. Each chew is a fixed dose, so a bigger dog gets more chews rather than a stronger chew.

The chew itself is made with pumpkin and sweet potato, two fiber sources most dogs already eat happily. Holistapet lists the formula as 100% natural ingredients and non-GMO, with no artificial sweeteners or preservatives, made in a GMP-certified facility.

How to feed probiotic chews for dogs

Feeding is by weight, once a day:

• Under 20 lbs: 1 chew
• 20 to 50 lbs: 2 chews
• Over 50 lbs: 3 chews

The chews are one size for every breed; the weight chart sets the count. Give it as a treat or with a meal, whichever your dog takes more easily. A 30-count bag is a month for a small dog, about two weeks for a mid-size dog, and ten days for a big one. Reseal the bag after each use and keep it in a cool, dry cupboard.
